POSTCARDS FROM QUARANTINE

POSTCARDS FROM QUARANTINE

March 26, 2020 - April 25, 2020
Alabama Contemporary Art Center
301 Conti Street
Mobile, Alabama

Mobile, AL: Alabama Contemporary Art Center is shifting the way we connect through the arts in this time of social distancing. With mass cancellations and our doors closed we’ve had to rethink how we fulfill our mission, and figure out new ways to meet the community where they are (which is stuck at home). We are starting by re-allocating funds for small commissions of artwork to send to people who need a little light in their life right now.

POSTCARDS FROM QUARANTINE

PHASE ONE: Calling All Artists!  Artists from Mobile and Baldwin Counties are invited to participate in the campaign by submitting original artwork under the theme “We’re all in this together”. All submissions will be featured in a public virtual gallery on the Alabama Contemporary website. Ten winning designs will be selected for printing and the winning artists will receive $150 each for their submission as well as a 10-pack of postcards featuring their design. Postcard designs must be submitted by midnight April 6th, 2020.

PHASE TWO: Alabama Contemporary is taking volunteers to write postcards to the community’s most vulnerable residents: individuals quarantined in nursing homes, homeless shelters, half-way houses and the like. Each volunteer will receive a list of 10 first names and 10 artist designed postcards, all postage will be paid and ready to mail. Writers (amateur or professional) can sign up to be a pen-pal to 10 individuals who need it.

Additionally, starting in April, packages of the winning submissions will also be for sale at alabamacontemporary.org for $25 to anyone who would like to distribute them on their own.
