NEW WORK BY MICHELLE JONES

Tigers are predators, a label which invokes sinister images of violence and peril; the wrath of the wild. We don’t normally imagine predators in languid pools, draped in an unconstrained landscape…

New Island is an exhibition of new and existing work from multi-media artist Michelle Jones. Jones’ paintings depict tigers and other predators in their natural environments as subdued bodies isolated in a lush and verdant landscape. This body of work examines the relationship between the landscape and the subjects who inhabit it. Here, the land is the protagonist, the apex predator, teeming and prolific in an unending onslaught of new growth. Jones’ work finds the beauty in this madness while also serving as a warning. In an exhibition of paintings, fiber art and site-specific installation, New Island will invite viewers to revel in the excess, and looming terror of nature itself.

New Island is part of the Independent Projects Program at Alabama Contemporary Art Center. Michelle Jones is a native of central Mississippi and received her MFA in painting from Massachusetts College of Art. After spending eleven years in Boston, she returned to the South in 2014 where she now resides in Mobile, AL. Her art seeks to find an order within the chaos of life’s interruptions.
