June 12th

We are pleased to announce that Alabama Contemporary Art Center will be re-opening our doors on Friday, June 12th! Our current exhibition THE DROWNED was literally open for one Saturday before we shut down, so we know A LOT of you haven’t seen it. Re-opening in June is really about giving you a chance to see this exhibition, guest curated by Aaron Levi Garvey, featuring 9 artists and years of work in the making. It broke our hearts to close it right after we opened it, but maybe we can try to make up for lost time?
So crank up the band, light the sparkles and get your masks and sanitizer ready, because we have some stipulations:

REDUCED HOURS

We will be open Thursdays through Saturdays 11-5 PM. June 12th is a Friday so the first Thursday we’ll be open is the 18th.

MASKS REQUIRED

In order to keep our patrons, volunteers, and front of line staff safe we will require a face covering for all patrons. Think of it like a fanciful element of a dress code, like parties that require hats, or those plaid pantaloons you wear to play golf. It’s not negotiable.

SANITATION STATIONS

We’re setting up little stations of hand sanitizer too, just in case. Like a spa?

LIMITED CAPACITY

We’re putting a firm limit on our gate of 100 people (1/8 of our normal capacity). Because we have a lot of space it’s more than possible to social distance in our galleries, but mostly up to you. Imagine you’re at a middle school dance – like before you gained the bravery hormones gave you and you still thought people had cooties. They kind of literally do now…

PAY WHAT YOU CAN 2020

You read that right, we’re waiving admission for the rest of the year. First of all we know a lot of you are in financial pain over all this. Secondly, it protects our staff as a point of contact. We’ll have a donation box you can safely drop something into, whatever you feel. We do still need your support, but we need you to be healthy and happy more.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

You might not be aware of this, but our front of line staff and much of our existing volunteer base has pre-existing conditions or is in a high-risk age group. We are hoping to staff the front desk with volunteers that want to see us open, feel good about thier health risk level, and don’t mind hanging out with a bunch of art all day. If you are working remotely you can totally bring a laptop, as long as you don’t mind taking small breaks when people arrive. Our volunteer form is here.
