FEATURING WORK BY TIA-SIMONE GARDNER | STACEY HOLLOWAY | CELESTIA MORGAN

CURATED BY PETER PRINZ

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has brought an awareness of distance to the forefront of all of our lives.  We have been thrust apart, geographically, physically and mentally. Social distance has become the new convention since 2020, but for some, social distances have been in place much longer.

Curated by PETER PRINZ of Birmingham’s Space One Eleven, this exhibition of work by artists TIA-SIMONE GARDNER, STACEY HOLLOWAY, and CELESTIA MORGAN, explores differing forms of distances which have been enforced throughout history.  From the stay at home orders and six-feet-rules of the COVID-19 Pandemic, to housing discrimination and systemic racism which has had lasting reprecussions for more than a century, Distances gives a visual representation of the challenging social and economical distances we have, and are still enduring.

Distances is part of the Guest Curator program at Alabama Contemporary. The exhibition features video work by Tia-Simone Gardner which illustrates a history of our nation’s wealth built through a river’s landscape of Black labor and materiality; sculpture by Stacey Holloway in response to isolation as a result of the COVID pandemic; and multi-media work by Celestia Morgan exposing systemic racism as practiced by lenders from the 1930s through the late 1960s.  Distances was curated by Peter Prinz.
