Atlanta based emerging artist Y. Malik Jalal will mount his first solo exhibition this fall at Alabama Contemporary, curated by elizabet elliott. Jalal was born in Savannah, GA, and raised in the Atlanta suburbs. He paints and makes images and objects. His work is equally personal and fictitious, rooted in both the artist’s own identity and his relationship to the collective cultural identity and history of the African diaspora in the American South. 

Guest curated by Ashley Stull Meyers through the Alabama Contemporary Art Center’s new Guest Curator Program, If You Have Ghosts includes four artists who engage with contemporary fiber techniques (both physical and digital) to recall their familial and ancestral histories.

Mobile, AL: Alabama Contemporary Art Center is shifting the way we connect through the arts in this time of social distancing. With mass cancellations and our doors closed we’ve had to rethink how we fulfill our mission, and figure out new ways to meet the community where they are. We are starting by re-allocating funds for small commissions of artwork to send to people who need a little light in their life right now.

Camp Expression at Alabama Contemporary Art Center gives teens the opportunity to explore contemporary art, their ideas, and themselves through a broad range of creative media.

Every quarter, we host a set of short talks by local makers and enthusiasts on a theme. Think tiny home-grown TED talks. Each speaker gives a 10 minute presentation on a topic that interests them, and then we Q & A the night away.  Hosted by local enthusiast Sean Sullivan, join us to get to know your creative community on a whole new level.

Kids Studio is a weekly program where children and their families can come to explore contemporary art. Activities are designed to stimulate young minds through open-ended projects that encourage self-expression and idea exploration. Classes are taught by local artists and trained professional educators.

Alabama Contemporary Art Center invites Girl Scouts of South Alabama's Brownies and Juniors to enjoy a day full of fun in the galleries and studios as they learn the basic elements of painting and drawing. 

In this beginners' ceramics class, instructor Bronco Sloan will guide students through introductory wheel-throwing techniques to create functional ceramic ware.

At ACAC, we are rolling back any commitments to an opening date. My top priority is keeping our staff and supporters safe. As much as we miss you all and would love to throw open our doors, there is simply no level of health risk that I find an acceptable trade for admission. Until we are sure that we can open safely while protecting our front of line staff and patrons, we won't make a return announcement.
