Work by Stephanie Sutton

This exhibition brings together a selection of performance-for-the-camera works by artist Stephanie Sutton that examine the body as a site of labor, desire, and the ways it is seen. Through self-portraiture, Sutton uses her own body to question how identity is constructed through screens, mirrors, and other technologies that increasingly shape our relationships with ourselves and one another. Centering the fat body as a powerful, noncompliant visual presence, the work challenges ideals of discipline, productivity, and self-improvement, proposing instead that pleasure, contradiction, and vulnerability become forms of resistance.

Stephanie Sutton is an Associate Professor of Art at Winthrop University, specializing in photography and expanded media. Sutton’s work is recognized for its success in transgressing the limits of the isolated subject and redirecting self-consciousness onto the viewer. She earned her MFA from the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia, and her BFA in studio art from the Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design at Georgia State University. She lives and works near Rock Hill, South Carolina.
