Cuba Premieres: An Evening of Short Films

Join us for the final screening of our Cuba Premieres film series! Curated by local filmmaker, Gideon Kennedy, this collection of short films from “The Golden Age of Cuban Cinema” will kick off with Octavio Cortazar’s Por Primera Vez (For the First Time), followed by five short films by experimental Cuban filmmaker, Santiago Alvarez, whose “nervous montage” style is considered the precursor to the modern video clip.

In 1960s Cuba, the Cuban Revolution was the first to be televised live to the public. During this time, cinema flourished as an innovative tool that would provide new means for representation of the Cuban society and culture, under the support of the new government. In The Golden Age of Cuban Cinema (also known as Década de Oro), filmmakers were given the freedom to experiment with historical narrative and reconsider the Revolution within national and global contexts.
