Historic Avenue Cultural Center

The Historic Avenue Cultural Center opened to the public on October 4, 2023, with Remembering the Avenue, a civic practice exhibition curated by Jada Jones through Alabama Contemporary Art Center’s Guest Curator Program. The exhibit enlists the local community in mapping the history, legacy, and possible futures for historic Davis Avenue.

The historic building that is now the Historic Avenue Cultural Center has a long and significant history. It has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1983.

As a founding partner of the Historic Avenue Cultural Center (HACC), we plan programming and exhibition content that acts as a vessel to empower the community of the newly established Civil Rights and Cultural Heritage District.

At the annual block party and other programs throughout the year, community members share stories that reclaim the narrative of the neighborhood that was once dubbed “Black Main Street.”
