The Lost Cause merges art history and contemporary imagery to construct an alternate reality, critiquing representations of race, masculinity and ultimately exploring “history” as a malleable and inherently creative enterprise. The work reimagines symbols and elements of history and imbues them with a new mythology replete with iconography that subverts white male gaze. 

Guest curated by curatorial collective Triptych Arts, this exhibition looks at the different codices of Black folk magic and its widespread international iterations that continue to challenge Eurocentric modernist binaries.

Start your Artwalk at Alabama Contemporary! We’ll open the new exhibition, Between the Snakes curated by Triptych Arts, and sling drinks and Wild Things Ball tickets all night. The Mobile Animation Film Festival will kick off in our 3rd Floor Terrace Room at 6:30 p.m. too, so wander upstairs to take in an animated short or two (or ten).

During this soft opening of the newly renovated African American Archives building, renamed the Historic Avenue Cultural Center, hear about future plans for this space, the upcoming exhibition, and witness or participate in the first "Community Mapping" session in which locals are encouraged to share their memories and stories. This event is free and open to the public.

Thursdays, 5:30 p.m. - 8 p.m. Instructor: Kyle Miller In this Thursday night beginners’ ceramics class, instructor Kyle Miller guides students through introductory handbuilding techniques – pinch pot, slab, coil, and beginner sculpture – to create functional ceramic ware. 

This exhibition of new and existing work by Elsa María Meléndez (Caguas, PR 1974) explores the intersection of political and personal identity. Through large-scale fabric constructions, as well as small-scale dioramas that the artist calls “theaters”, the narrative spaces Meléndez creates tell stories that document the uncertainty one experiences while living in Puerto Rico, an “Island of Confusion.”

This exhibition of new and existing work by Elsa María Meléndez (Caguas, PR 1974) explores the intersection of political and personal identity. Meléndez experiments through different mediums, utilizing soft textiles, large-format embroidery, and serigraphs to create a body of work that traverses scale.
