Soft Grand Opening of the Historic Avenue Cultural Center

Soft Grand Opening of the Historic Avenue Cultural Center

September 24, 2022, 11:00 am - 2:00 pm
Historic Avenue Cultural Center
564 Dr Martin Luther King Jr Ave
Mobile, AL 36603

Davis Avenue in the 1940s-1970s was “Black Main Street” – a hub of black-owned businesses and venues, a walkable and tight-knit community with dense activity. Urban Renewal in the 1970s bisected the community and removed more than half of the businesses and resources on The Avenue. Remembering the Avenue is an exhibition opening in May 2023 that will explores not only the history and shared memory of a once thriving community, but seed the potential for new growth and possibility through shared dreaming.

During this soft opening of the newly renovated African American Archives building, renamed the Historic Avenue Cultural Center, hear about future plans for this space, the upcoming exhibition, and witness or participate in the first “Community Mapping” session in which locals are encouraged to share their memories and stories. This event is free and open to the public.
