Remembering the Avenue is a civic practice exhibition curated through Alabama Contemporary's Guest Curator Program that enlists the local community in mapping the history, legacy, and possible futures for historic Davis Avenue.

Climate Change—the largest environmental challenge of our time—is the result of a vision of progress forged in the nineteenth century when fossil fuels spurred industrialization on a global scale. Picturesque America, published in 1872, captured the beginning of US industrialization in lush illustrations that placed railroads and factories in expansive horizons that symbolized boundless possibility. This exhibition places these nineteenth-century views of progress in dialogue with Allison Grant’s contemporary photographs of the chemical and fossil fuel industries in West Alabama.

This exhibition explores the interconnected waterbodies of the Caribbean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Gulf as fluid sites of memories and pathways for the Caribbean diasporic people. Artists Keysha Rivera, Trecha Gay Jheneall, and Keiaria Williams use textile works, installations, photography, and mixed media to represent the prevalence of water as a form of remembrance through the process of creation.

This exhibition is an anti-retrospective guided by artist Pinky/MM Bass, a pillar of the Southern art scene. Building on a long history of collaboration, Bass is creating work that both enlists and pays homage to the folx that have impacted her work and life over her long career.

SUMMER CAMP Ages 6-10 Instructors: Tori Caldwell & Christy LeGros The best of both worlds: campers will experience watercolor painting and make playful sculptures out of clay with local artists Tori Caldwell and Christy LeGros. Campers will create mixed media sculptures and take home their personalized stained glass, making memories that shine brightly all summer long!

Whether you're a seasoned artist or a curious beginner, this event provides the perfect setting to hone your skills in figure drawing and meet like-minded individuals in a relaxed, inspiring environment. Entry is $20, and space is limited. Bring you own art supplies or purchase a kit onsite with additional donation.

Alabama Contemporary Art Center is open every second Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. with entry by donation for Downtown Mobile's monthly LODA Artwalk, and we almost always have a special visitors, programs, exhibitions, and/or activities to celebrate creative thinking. The Member Bar is also available to our adult members during each Artwalk while they enjoy all artist talks, exhibitions, and programs.

SUMMER CAMP Ages 6-10 Instructor: Soynika Edwards-Bush Students will explore different art mediums, including portrait painting, collage, mixed media, watercolor, drawing, and movement with local artist Soynika Edwards-Bush.

SUMMER CAMP Ages 11-15 Instructors: Courtney Matthews & Nadine Andrews This camp will focus on exploring emotions through theatrical exercises and creating fun costumes. Students will create their own authentic character, and imagine their wardrobe, make-up and staging.

Kindred Yoga will join us on the terrace at ACAC on the last Saturday morning of every month, from 9-10 a.m. This drop-in session will feature a 45-minute yoga flow followed by 15 minutes of mingling with fresh, cold-pressed juices for sale from Ginger & Spice.
