Atlanta based emerging artist Y. Malik Jalal will mount his first solo exhibition this fall at Alabama Contemporary, curated by elizabet elliott. Jalal was born in Savannah, GA, and raised in the Atlanta suburbs. He paints and makes images and objects. His work is equally personal and fictitious, rooted in both the artist’s own identity and his relationship to the collective cultural identity and history of the African diaspora in the American South.

The Drowned, curated by Aaron Levi Garvey as a part of Alabama Contemporary Art Center’s new guest curator program, is a collection of photographs, paintings, and films that highlight and play with altered realities.

It’s with a heavy heart that we are announcing, as of today, that our main galleries will be closed to the public with a tentative plan to re-open April 6th. Additionally, we are committing 60% of all new reciprocal memberships to relief for service industry folks until April 6th.

Mobile, AL: Alabama Contemporary Art Center is shifting the way we connect through the arts in this time of social distancing. With mass cancellations and our doors closed we’ve had to rethink how we fulfill our mission, and figure out new ways to meet the community where they are. We are starting by re-allocating funds for small commissions of artwork to send to people who need a little light in their life right now.

Kids Studio is a weekly program where children and their families can come to explore contemporary art. Activities are designed to stimulate young minds through open-ended projects that encourage self-expression and idea exploration. Classes are taught by local artists and trained professional educators.
