In 2015, Alabama Contemporary Art Center partnered with the Souls Grown Deep Foundation of Atlanta, Georgia, to produce History Refused to Die, an exhibition featuring seventy-five works of art by fifteen self-taught African American artists from Alabama.

The artwork, which is divided up into sections that create a timeline of Black history in the South, offers visitors a raw view into the reality of being an African-American throughout history up to the present day.

The artists have previously been denied recognition and support by mainstream media, but were recently accepted into New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art’s permanent collection – a grand achievement for any artist.

Alabama Contemporary has celebrated many other successes during this exhibition including national press recognition and a successful rebranding through a partnership between Mobile’s Red Square Agency and New York’s 2×4 Design Firm.
