FRANCINE TINT
November 8, 2019 - January 25, 2020
Alabama Contemporary Art Center
301 Conti Street
Mobile, Alabama

Abstract expressionism emerged in the 1950s as an American answer to a Eurocentric wave of modernist ideals. Championed and promoted by influential art critic Clement Greenberg, Jackson Pollock’s now-famous allover “drip paintings” ushered in a new style that posed new possibilities to the creative process, consciousness, and physical gesture of making. The abstract expressionist approach to art inspired generations of devoted scholars, critics, and followers intent on preserving a heritage of American artistic innovation.

New York-based artist Francine Tint’s (1943-present) colorful paintings are influenced by and contribute to this long lineage of abstract art. Taking inspiration from artists such as Willem de Kooning and Arshile Gorky, Tint creates lyrically free abstracted paintings that express intuition through color. Tint credits discussions with Clement Greenberg in her studio as a guiding artistic force. Though abstract expressionism is an oft-imitated and commented upon style, Tint’s paintings remain distinctively her own, especially considering the field is largely male-dominated.

Thirty of Francine Tint’s paintings will be on view between November 8, 2019, and January 25, 2020, at the Alabama Contemporary Art Center. Tint has had over 30 solo exhibitions, has been reviewed in several art magazines, and has received grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. This exhibition is organized by Katharine T. Carter and Associates in New York, NY.
